What is PCS (Personal Care Services)?

Personal Care Services (PCS) is a Medicaid benefit that helps eligible individuals with everyday tasks they may not be able to do on their own. These tasks fall into two categories:

Types of Tasks Covered:

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs):
These are basic self-care tasks, such as:

• Bathing
• Eating
• Assisting with toileting
• Dressing
• Walking or moving around

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs):
These are everyday household tasks, including:

• Laundry
• Light housework
• Meal preparation

PCS Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify for PCS, an individual must:

• Be from birth through age 20 and enrolled in Medicaid
• Have a disability, physical or mental illness that limits their ability to perform ADLs or IADLs
• Have a Practitioner Statement of Need signed by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant who has examined the individual within the last 12 months
• Show a need for help with ADLs and IADLs, based on a Personal Care Assessment Form (PCAF)
• Provide a valid reason why a responsible adult is unable to help with these daily tasks

PCS helps young individuals live safely and comfortably in their home environment by ensuring they receive the daily care they need.
